Throughout the history of the world, their have been significant people, events, and places that have not been recorded for fact. A myth helps explain them. By definition a myth is a traditional or legendary story that is often fictional or invented. But to a person of a certain race, religion, or background a myth may be how they interpret how they got to where they are today. There have been specific people that take up their lives to help people understand them better. One of there people was a man named James Frazer. He classified his own definition of myth as “some myths are explanatory, being pre-scientific attempts to interpret the natural world.” James Frazer’s dedicated his career to the study of myths, recorded his findings and discoveries about myths, and up to today is praised and scorned about his work.

James Frazer was an expert in his topic, and throughout his studies gained the authority to define his own meaning of myth. James Frazer was born January 1, 1854, in Scotland; he would remain in this region of Europe. He was educated at Larchfield Academy, Glasgow and Trinity College, all at the top of his class. Here is where he began his major research work; he studied to be social anthropologist, which is a type of anthropology that studies how humans behave in social groups. In this field he began to translate findings of other great anthropologists. The study of myth and religion became his areas of expertise. He began to suggest a relation between myths and rituals. This gave myths authority in the order of society. He compared ancient cults, rites, and myths with early Christianity. He collected his prime sources from data of ancient histories and questioned missionaries and important officials all around the world. The journey to gain his expertise on the topic of myth was a long one that required a wide range of studies.

James Frazer was not only famous for his study of myth, but his recordings. After the completion on researching how ancient myths affected social behavior, he wrote what would become a world book known as the The Golden Bough. The book contained two novels that compared and contrasted myth and religion. The book explains how Christianity came to be, “Old religions were cults that revolved around the worship of, and periodic sacrifice of, a sacred king.” He also explained how the basis of a religion was based on the reviving of a significant figure, “the incarnation of a dying and reviving god”. Frazer claimed that this myth or legend was the basis to all of the worlds mythologies. Frazer quotes "When I first put pen to paper to write The Golden Bough I had no conception of the magnitude of the voyage on which I was embarking.” It is clear that Frazer documented a great amount of information in his recordings. Although, his work has been review by scholors around the world.

James Frazer was praised by many studying anthropologists, and others did not agree with the therories he created. Many scholors have called Frazer the father of anthropology. Frazer was far from being the first to study religions as a cultural. He was the first to detail the relations between myths and rituals. The Golden Bough to many is arguably his greatest work. The view had impact on society. “His theory was extended to explain the meaning of myths in literate societies like are own.” As Totemism and Exogamy (1910) quotes. James Frazer was eventually even knighted for his work in the field. Frazer’s work is not a favorite to everyone, more recently today. He was often accused of not wanting to discuss his ideas or give more information on them. His work has been said to be flawed, and not based on actual field work just theory ideas. Anthopology Today a book about the field, disscusses how the information that Frazer proposed could not be explained with historic fact. Despite the reviews, James Frazer’s work was much needed in the advancement of researching myths and religion.

James Frazer is known throughout the world as being a highly educated man who has studied a great amount of anthropology. His work gave authority to the field, and now students studying myths can look to him as a resource. He produced recordings of his studies that is important for all students to review and study. A book that is still read today for myth related topics. Finally he has been disscused around the world and his work has been reviewed by many books published. Myth has been defined by many over the course of time. It is different to each individual, and that is what makes it an important topic to research and learn about. They help explain stories that fact can not prove. James Frazer was an individual who defenied it for himself and many others.
